Abe Breiling received both the B.M. and M.M. degrees from N.I.U. in steelpan; focusing on performance, composing/arranging, and instrument building. While studying under Liam Teague and Cliff Alexis; Abe travelled to Trinidad in 2000 to participate in the World Steelband Festival, where N.I.U. placed second. He also participated in the 2002 Seoul Drum Festival which took place in Seoul, South Korea. Many other performances were obtained including on and off campus concerts. Before attending N.I.U., Abe was involved in three area community college steelbands. Upon graduating, Abe performed in the Chicago, East Tennessee, and currently Charleston, South Carolina areas. The main musical mission of Abe’s is to create music for everyone to enjoy and integrate the steelpan into ensembles not usually associated with pan. Composing and arranging music for steelpan and non steelpan instruments together is his way of contributing to the music community most effectively.
